Why not become a volunteer?

Why not become one of our team of 35 plus volunteers?  Organised by our Coordinator, you can help our residents in all sorts of practical ways.  From providing lifts to the local surgery, assisting with shopping, walking dogs, helping with IT or paperwork.

Whatever your skills or experience, volunteering is a way to make a real difference in our community.

And volunteering is a great way to meet people -the  other volunteers as well as other residents in Solva

… Gaynor and Kelly’s story

Solva Care service user Gaynor Lynch needed help to improve her confidence with getting outside to walk her dog Pudding, a Chihuahua. “I had a hospital stay, well a couple, and I was very unsure about walking, even though I had a stroller,” she says.

So she was matched with Kelly Dixon, 22, one of Solva Care’s 36 volunteers who started helping when she was home from university, and she joins Gaynor and Pudding on their walks.

“For me it’s nice to meet more people in the village who I have not seen around before,” she says. “It makes you feel really good to help other people.”

… our volunteers Gill and Maureen

Two Solva Care volunteers who feature in an Ageing Well in Wales case study.

Maureen says that “I’ve been visiting one lady now for over two years. She has dementia. If the weather is good, we’ll go for walks or pop out to a coffee morning. I make sure that the cupboards are all well-stocked. It helps her stay independent and provides some respite for her family. We have such good fun together. We sometimes sit down and she’ll start reminiscing. She talks about her time as an evacuee, which is fascinating. During the  summer, she loves to watch the tennis on the television. I found out that she used to get complimentary tickets for Wimbledon as a volunteer for Barnado’s in London.”

“…my reason for joining is simply that I have personally experienced serious health problems for many years and, because of the help and support I have had here in Solva, it made me realise now I should do something to give back while I can.”
